Dr. Kemi Doll Awarded 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award
Congratulations to Dr. Kemi Doll, who was awarded the 2025 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Service Award! This award, which is conferred by the University of Washington Medical Center, recognizes members of the UW community who are committed to addressing community needs, improving the human condition, and protecting and empowering all individuals.
“I am so grateful and honored to be highlighted for this recognition,” said Dr. Doll. “The Rev. Dr. King was a towering figure of courage and example of service in our society and I am moved that the work we do can be seen in this light.”
Dr. Kemi Doll is a gynecologic oncologist and professor at UW. Her research focuses on improving outcomes for Black/African American and White women experiencing gynecologic diseases, especially endometrial cancer. In 2017, she co-founded the Endometrial Cancer Action Network for African-Americans (ECANA), the nation's first endometrial cancer advocacy organization for Black women. She is currently the founding director of the Gynecologic Research And Cancer Equity (GRACE) Center at the UW.
The theme for this year’s Community Service Awards is “Rising Up to the Challenge: Uniting for Freedom, Justice and Democracy.” Dr. Doll was selected for this award for her tireless efforts to understand and find solutions for racial health disparities, her advocacy work for public policies and interventions to improve health outcomes for Black women, and her support and mentorship for other women of color in STEM fields.
Dr. Doll is a member of the Cancer Consortium's Breast & Ovary Cancers program.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Doll!

Cancer Consortium Pilot Awards
Funds are available from the Fred Hutch/University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Cancer Consortium (“the Consortium”) to support cancer-related pilot projects. This competition will provide 3-4 awards of up to $100,000 direct costs (plus F&A/indirect costs) for one year of pilot project support. All Consortium members are eligible for this pilot funding.
There are no limitations on research topic, provided the problem under study is focused on cancer. Highly innovative concepts that have the potential to improve the lives of cancer patients are encouraged. Also included in this competition are two categories targeted as areas of special interest to the Consortium: health equity research and cross-disciplinary translational research.
For more information about eligibility, application requirements, and more, please see the RFA ( click here). Applications are due February 14th, 2025, by 5:00pm PST.

Nanopore Sequencing in Genomics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource
The Genomics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (G&BSR) is pleased to announce that we have acquired an Oxford Nanopore Technologies P2 Solo sequencing system. This sequencing technology provides cost-effective long-read sequencing to support a variety of applications, including whole genome sequencing, long-read RNA sequencing, whole plasmid sequencing, microbial genome sequencing, and direct RNA sequencing. Additionally, this technology enables direct methylation detection. The P2 Solo can run two PromethION flow cells in parallel. Each PromethION flow cell can output >100 Gb per 72-hour run.
The G&BSR is offering library preparation using the Native Barcoding Kit (ligation) and Rapid Barcoding (tagmentation) kits and are also providing sequencing-only services for user-prepared libraries. Additionally, we can support bioinformatic analysis, using the pipelines contained in the EPI2ME software suite. Contact us today at Genomics@fredhutch.org to discuss your project.
